This September, rising star actress Thuso Mbedu will be seen as the lead of Sony's The Woman King opposite Viola Davis. In the historical epic feature directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, Mbedu plays Nawi, an ambitious recruit who fights within the all-female military unit lead by Nanisca (Davis). The film was shot in Mbedu's home country of South Africa and also stars John Boyega and Lashana Lynch. Mbedu recently won an Independent Spirit Award, Gotham Award, and Hollywood Critics Association Award, and was nominated for a Critics Choice Award, for her starring role as "Cora" in Barry Jenkins' The Underground Railroad, making her the first South African leading woman of a US television series. The limited series is based on Colson Whitehead's bestselling Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, which the Oscar winner Jenkins adapted and directed. For her performance, USA Today called Mbedu the "series' stunning standout, imbuing Cora with a deep humanity and empathy in her every scene, even when she has no dialogue." An established actress in South Africa, Mbedu was nominated for her second International Emmy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in 2018 for her breakout performance on the series Is'Thunzi. She won a SAFTA (South African Film & TV Awards) for Best Actress - TV Drama for her work on the series. Thuy Trang was born on December 14th of 1973 in Saigon, Vietnam. After the fall of Saigon in 1975 to Communist forces, her father who had fought in the Vietnam War, traveled to the United States to seek political asylum. However, his entire family, unable to follow, were left behind. In 1979, Thuy and her family boarded a cargo ship with other refugees to travel to the United States. However, first they sailed to a detention camp in Hong Kong. The family was finally reunited in California in 1980. Thuy graduated from Banning High School and earned a scholarship to study civil engineering at UC Irvine. After her father died from cancer In 1992, Thuy got interested in acting and, in 1993, got her first big break when she landed the role of Trini Kwan on the hit TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993). In 1994, Thuy left the show to pursue other projects. After appearing in a video documentary called the Encyclopedia of Martial Arts: Hollywood Celebrities (1995), as an interviewee, and a cameo as a manicurist in Spy Hard (1996), Thuy got her next large role as Kali in The Crow: City of Angels (1996), the sequel to The Crow (1994). Tragically, on September 3rd 2001, Thuy was a passenger in a car traveling on the I-5, that lost control. She suffered fatal injuries. She leaves behind only a small body of work but, through them, she made an impact on many. Thuy Trang will be missed by many.
Thuy-Van Truong is a German actress, graduate of Paderborn University and earned a scholarship to study Creative Art at Umeå University in Sweden. During her studies, Thuy got interested in acting and, in 2011, got her first big role of "Marie" in Georg Büchner's play "Woyzeck" at Studiobühne Paderborn. Her stage credits include William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (role fairy), Alexandre de La Patellière's and Matthieu Delaporte's "Le Prénom" (role Anna), Friedrich Dürrenmatt's "Der Besuch der alten Dame" (role Koby), and Engelbert Humperdinck's opera "Hänsel & Gretel" (role family member). After her graduation, Thuy gained her first cinematic experiences in movies such as "In the Fades" (starring Diane Kruger), "Eleanor & Colette" (starring Hilary Swank and Helena Bonham Carter), and "7500" (starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Thuy received leading parts in commercials including Trivago, Volkswagen, and Batida de Côco and was also a guest starred on German television series like "Sträters Männerhaushalt", "Rabenmütter", and "Check Check". In 2019, Thuy was especially interested in dancing and took part in several workshops (House Dance, Hip Hop New Style & Lyrical, and Popping-Locking). She also had the privilege of working with choreographer Gianni Cuccaro and award-winning dancer Noriko Nishidate at Theater Bielefeld amongst an international ensemble, dancing in "Schrittmacher".
